Flooring Installation Quotes: Why Prep Work Changes the Price
A low price per square foot can leave out removal, leveling, trim and transitions. Here's what to compare.

Flooring is quoted per square foot, but the material is only part of the job. Preparation and finishing work is where quotes differ most.
Before the new floor goes down
- Removal of the old flooring, tack strip or glue.
- Subfloor prep: leveling and repairs. Many floating floors need a flat surface to stay quiet and lock properly.
- Underlayment and moisture barrier, especially over concrete.
Finishing details
- Baseboards or quarter round — removed and reinstalled, or replaced.
- Transitions where the new floor meets other rooms, and stair nosing.
- Moving furniture and appliances.
How much material?
Quotes usually add extra material for cuts and waste. Ask how much, and whether you keep the leftover boxes for future repairs.
Compare typical prices in the cost estimator and send installers the quote request template.
